TL:DR
Once you get an email from Healthie about activating Penciled, go to your Healthie dashboard, click “Documents,” and send us the file ending in “API_KEY.csv”
What is API key?
If you’re not on an enterprise plan or don’t have an API key already, it can be confusing to understand what exactly an API key does.
An API key is a series of characters (i.e. “xyz12&9dnf*j^dl99383”) that looks like a password. Healthie automatically generates this key, and anyone who gets this key can use it to access your EHR data. Healthie requires a step-by-step process to ensure the key is securely handled if you don't already have access to your API key.
Penciled’s system requires your Healthie API key to scan your calendar and book new patients into Healthie. Without the API key, our agents can’t interact with your Healthie system at all.
How to get an API key?
You’re in luck! If you selected “No” or “Not sure” when asked for your API key in Penciled’s onboarding, we’ve already begun the process. When you create an agent on Penciled without an API key, the Healthie team immediately gets notified that you need one.
So what next?
Well, you just have to wait a few hours. Usually, by the next day, you should receive an email from Healthie that looks like this:

From here, you have to log in to your Healthie portal and click on the “Documents” section. That should take you to a page like this
Look for the file ending in “API_Key.csv” and download it to your computer.
Next, open the CSV file, copy the API key, and head to app.penciled.com.

Click "Integration"
Paste in your API key, and click “Submit Token.”
You should now be good to go! Head to “Agents” to create your first agent.
